Al Fresco Breakfast at -20 Degrees F
Lens: DA 50-200mm Camera: K200D Photo Location: A Very Cold Place ISO: 100

I wasn't quick enough to catch the breakfast patrons at -22°F, but made it by the time the temp rose a little. Not great shots, but thought folks would like to see what these temps are like for the critters.

Checking the Temperature

Can't You Bring a Space Heater Out Here? A redpoll waits for the sun.

Frosty Goldfinch When it's this cold, birds' breath frosts on their "eyebrows" the way we get frost around our noses. This goldfinch also has snow on his back.

Looks like a bluejay frogfish. I never realized that birds would get frost on their faces before. The goldfinch is my favorite also. Thanks so much for sharing these Tamia.

Amazing, Tamia - your shots, the birds having frost on their "eyebrows" and the fact that you had the gumption to stand out there and take these very-well-done photos.

I love these pictures! These little guys have a terrific struggle this time of year. Any help we can give them will reward us in the spring, when they bless our lives with their presence.

Thanks, Kevin. The last photo is of a blue jay, a very common bird in the eastern US.

Thanks Susan. Just the other day I was thinking to myself that I'd never seen birds with frost on them the way we get it on cold days, and then this morning I saw they all had white rims around their eyes.

It amazes me also, Bob, especially with the smaller birds. When it's really cold, they stand or perch on one foot and keep the other inside their feathers to warm up.

Thank you, Jer. Some days I shoot through a window. I was able to photograph these outside today, but kept my distance so as not to chase them away from food, because I didn't want to stress them when it was so cold.

You are so right, Jim. I couldn't agree with you more, and thanks.
