Makin' My Neck Hurt
Lens: DA 55-300 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Texas Sea Center ISO: 400
Posted By: Sailor, 01-27-2011, 03:49 PM

There are, I suppose, few things the world needs less than more images of static egrets, but I couldn't help adding to the pile - the almost infinite elastisicity of their necks fascinates me (sort of flying versions of Chaplin). Yesterday, primarily to get out of the house and limber up the roadster, I took off on a blindingly blue but cool day, grabbing my camera as a last minute thought. After logging some vigorous (but not reckless) miles on some back roads, I found myself turning into the Texas Sea Center, where I snapped these pics. For those that are as ignorant about birds as I am, the last shot - taken in the Center's parking lot - is not one of an egret; rather, the image is a message to other retired geezers with time on their hands that getting to and from a "shoot" can be at least half the fun of the whole gig.

Judging by the way you parked (across the line), your eyesight is quickly fading. I know, I know, you did that to keep people from dinging the doors. Sweet ride!

Thanks for the nice words, Dave. We've got a beautiful day ahead and the weekend will bring some rain but looks pretty warm - I feel for you and the Capn.

Sorry, but . . . . . . . "If that ain't enough to make you flip your lid - there's one more thing: I got the pink slip Daddy."

I sure appreciate it, Ash. I'm afraid that last place this car want to be right now is in good old MA.

You're right, Bob - there is a risk. But since we're close to the coast, birds tend to seek out shiny, waxed boats (often mine) and leave the cars alone.

Nice ones again Jer. Love the last heron shot with the wild feathers on its neck. You boys sure do like your wheels.

Thanks, Susan - I was lucky to get that "wild man" shot.

I've been calling these birds "egrets" since coming to Texas, presumably because someone told me that's what they are. Yet others are refering to them as "herons". Is an egret something else?
