Despite having grown up hundreds of miles from the sea I have always loved tugboats, probably from encountering them in some picture books when I was a small boy.

These days while I'm down at the docks I sometimes have an opportunity to watch them at work in Tokyo and Yokohama and they are truly fascinating. It is really cool to see the tremendous boat handling skill some of the skippers have when they swing alongside to transfer a harbor pilot. And I never fail to be impressed at the rapid and matter-of-fact way they can bring a huge ship to her berth or pull her away and have her spun around and headed out to sea in a matter of just a very few minutes. I can think of no photo opportunity I'd rather have than the chance to ride one of them all day sometime and document what goes on.

glad you like seeing the tugs.... this was one of my favorite books so many many years ago... who knows... could've been your inspiration...
