Morning into the sun CR HARSH
Posted By: regken, 12-09-2006, 05:56 PM

Only had about 1/2 hour of good light at sunrise this morning. Never tried to shoot into the sun before. Sure would like to get heavy CR on this.

Thanks,
ken

Harsh, nawh; complete might be better...

This type of shot will take some practice.

First, the white balance. You're after some moody light-that morning golden glow. You really need a good midday WB from the day before or a filter, probably a grad in orange or tobacco: Cokin. Considering the two shadow areas, maybe two filters or a recomposition. A 'ND' might also help/work.

Timing will be critical to get enough light for a small aperture--actually you seem to have gotten that just about right.

Finally, back off the sharpening. You cannot make-up for shortcomings with extra sharpening--you just get halos. Work your sharpening with the image enlaged as much as 200 or 300%. Be sure to check both near and far objects. And you might need some noise abatement-be delicate.

Thanks,
I tried a warming filter and backed off the sharpening by over 50%. Is this closer to what you think it should be?

Thanks,
ken

Ah the second one is much better.
To emmulate an orange cokin filter you might try setting your forground to a likeable orange, adjustment layer, gradient, click reverse so the color is at the top and fades to the bottom. Set blending mode for this gradient layer to color burn, overlay or color to give some sunrise warmth to the clouds.
Could do the same as above but use a tobacco color for the foreground color before you select the gradient.
If they are too intense or artificial looking, change the opacity of the gradient layer to desired.

John,
Thanks for the wb and sharpening help. I think my understanding of wb is much better now. Sharpening is an issue that needs a lot of work.

Clarence,
Thanks for the gradient map help. Never knew how to use it. Spent about an hour fooling around with it and see where it can come in handy. Another bullet added to the arsenal.

Thanks again guys!!
Ken
