I don't believe that is a Black Widow unless it is some unusual subspecies... wrong color and markings...

As a plumber that has worked under houses for 30 years...it's a Black Widow! I've seen thousands of them and sometimes hundreds under a single house. Deadly but very non-aggressive....unless you accidentally mash one a little. A bite on or near the head can mean death, but otherwise you will likely survive. I have never been bitten, but did get hit by a Brown Recluse once.....very nasty bite. Among other problems, your skin will rot away at the bite site.
I have seen many variations of the hourglass, and different shades of red, but they are all Black Widows of various strains. Unmistakable if they do bite you!
Regards

They seem to be taking over the land scape here in South Australia I took a drive to NSW last weekend and it seems the orb spider is taking over the country side.

great photo... is the spider in sunlight? The colour is amazing, quite different that I expected. And, she is not really your pet... right?

This was my favorite little "Desk Buddy" for months until he died in a window opening accident...I still miss him.
[IMG] [/IMG]

This is my "Shop Buddy" and he built his web in a corner where there isn't much prey around, so I have to catch things and feed him ever week or so.....here I caught him a nice fat meal that lasted quite a while.

I love spiders, they are industrious, patient, and fascinating to watch. They keep the insects down, and in the summer here we have billions of buzzing insects!
Regards!

You may want to raise a bird then, as they eat way more insects than spiders do. :-)

I feed hundreds of birds every day! About 150# of feed a month. I recently counted 123 Doves on my cedar fence at an afternoon feeding. I feed Squirrels, Possums and Raccoons too, but they probably don't eat many insects!

Fifty feet of cedar fence is covered like this at least twice a day......

We're full! Time for a nap!

It's fun, isn't it!
Best Regards!

That's a nice shot of a nice specimen. Around here the hourglass is usually a deeper red, but I have seen many variations. Maybe I will get some shots of one of our locals the next time I am under a house working.
