The roadrunner is one of the most fun birds to watch. They are very curious, skilled hunters and often hard to photograph. I finally got a decent shot of a male that I wanted to share.

Good capture. Had no idea that's what they look like. Thanks also for the quick info on this intriguing bird.

Pentax 80-320mm, what do you think?
Ash, thanks for the comment, these birds actually catch small snakes, lizards and even hummingbirds Bob

Great photo. So much clarity and the eye and plumage on the belly is terrific. Really cool looking bird!

Ya know, Bob, I don't think I've ever seen even a picture of a real road runner. Nice shot.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the tittle, I have to admit, was a 383 V-8 mated with a 4-spd transimission .

Road runners are pretty neat. A couple of days ago, somebody posted a good shot of one on Flickr. What was interesting in the shot was that the bird was running across open ground (no grass or other vegetation), so you could see the legs and feet well. The lighting was also bright, so shadows were easily detectable. It thus became clear in the photo that neither of the bird's two feet were touching the ground. Quite a run!

Thanks for posting. I think this is the first pic I've seen of one of these birds. Only previously known about it from the infamous cartoons..

EM, funny that you mention the coyote, we saw one crossing the road when we were going to Indio the other day, he was out in the desert before I could stop and get a picture. Here are my final shots of the male and also a youngster. Thanks for the comments, glad that many of you were able to see one for the first time, other than in the cartoon.

Probably more like "artistic license".
Gotta make it "believable" for the kids or they won't watch. Yeah, right.
Now where's my anvil?.....
