Air Force Academy Chapel

Shown are pictures of the chapel that was built at the academy for all faiths of worship in 1963. The chapel soars over 150 feet into the air and is composed of steel, aluminum and glass and features 17 spires. There are two main levels, the upper level for Protestants, the lower for Catholic, Jewish and Buddhist along with an all-faiths room used by Muslims and other faiths. Located in Colorado Springs, the chapel and academy is a complex to be proud of and a must see if you are in the area. Admittance is quick and free, show current drivers license and a quick vehicle search. These pictures feature the exterior and Protestant portion of the Chapel

The tetrahedrons form the walls and the 99-foot-high pinnacled ceiling of the Protestant Chapel. Stained glass windows form ribbons of color between the tetrahedrons. Eight basic colors graduate from cool to warm, moving from liturgical colors of Advent to Easter, from the narthex (entrance) to the chancel (altar area). The floor is gray-white terrazzo.

The focal point of the chancel is the cross suspended over it. Constructed of aluminum, the cross is 46 feet, 2 inches high, 12 feet wide and weighs 1,200 pounds.

Very nice series. How'd you get it all to yourself?

Great shots, Bob - that is one beautiful place (and reminds me I haven't been back to Colorado Springs since the '80's).

Nice job.

Beautiful Bob. That chapel has to be in the most wonderful location ever with the spires duplicating the mountains behind it.

A great example of the 1960s architecture. Very Star Trek. It even has an entry on Great Buildings:

Thanks for sharing.

Not really sure what was going on, parts of the academy were busy but the chapel was pretty quiet.
