Not sure why this gets posted on both pages....(Oh, Adam says it is designed that way...)

On Route 66 in the southern Californian desert is this tree and a little pile of asphalt, marking the former location of the town of Bagdad.

Not far away is Siberia. This is it.

Two Guns, Arizona used to have a gas station, store, and zoo.

I have enjoyed traveling with you. In 1973 we purchased our first motorhome, a 22 foot 1973 Pace Arrow from a dealer in Victorville and our first big trip was through AZ and included Canyon de Chelly, I had to carry our 4 year old daughter back up, I honestly thought it was a further hike. One thing that I learned on our trip through Indian Lands, is that they do not sell beer on the reservation, long trip back to civilization to make a purchase. Quick comment on the 66 Vette/Hwy 66, I had one that I purchased in 1966, a 427 cid/425hp roadster, my graduation from high school, of course 66. Comfort no, hauling "A" yes, wish I still had it but marriage and then kids ended that.

I am glad to see the site is still in this good of condition since it is basically not protected and has not had much restoration. Amazing that this site which was abandoned by the Anasazi around 1300, still has the wonderful outlines of the pueblos where the ancients once walked. Interesting to see the old river bed that green, I wonder if it still flows underground at points. Very nice photography detailing the settlement, I have really enjoyed your travels. thanks Bob

Amboy airport.

Actually, the "town" next door was bought a few years ago, and is being revived, slowly.

Atolia.

Randsburg is actually a weekend tourist spot. This is a weekday, though.

Still lots of open shaft mines in Randsburg and Atolia, very dangerous if you don't know the area. Did you stop in at the White House Saloon, they serve a great pastrami sandwich and authentic sarsaparilla.

These are places I know. I was stationed at George AFB in the late 80's. Drove by them alot. I spent 6 years in that area. Some of it I miss. Most I do not. Thanks for posting.

When they closed George, it really hurt the local economy, nice to know someone else lived in the High Desert. It has gotten so big now that you wouldn't recognize some of the area. Hesperia is now close to 90,000 population. take care Bob
Kyle hope you didn't mind me adding to this thread with my personal experiences.
As an add, when I was a kid our address was:

Sparky's Desert Gold Freeze
14732 Hwy 66
Victorville, CA

A great place to "Get your Kicks on Route 66".

On the route 66 I was once in my life during a trip from Nevada to the Grand Canyon, but I do remrmber this trip with a great sentiment. It was a really good spending time to see that places again. Thanks SpecialK for showing them...

This is Carty's Camp in Needles CA, which was shown functional in the 1940 movie The Grapes of Wrath, about Oakies coming to California via the Mother Road, as Steinbeck called it.

After getting through the hills onto the flat east of Oatman, AZ, you come across Ed's Camp.

Near Cartago.

Manzanar was a "relocation center" for Japanese-Americans in WWII.

I keep forgetting that here in Oregon we have a old sentimental road too. U.S. 30. The old columbia gorge hiway. All thats left of it now runs from The dalles to Portland. It was known as America's most beautiful hiway. Runs down the Columbia gorge. Very narrow 2 lane. I cannot wait till this summer to take a drive down it and load up on the pics.
Historic Columbia River Highway as you can guess here is a link. These are not my pics. but they can give you an idea.
Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway hope you like them.
