2 photos I took with My FA 50mm F1.7om my K10d Body. Your Critique would be appreciated

They're both mysterious. I prefer the second one, although I would have liked to see a bird there, too. On the first one, it feels like you're struggling with the disorder. ("Poor bird, standing there"). The second one is a little less messy.

Which one do you prefer yourself, and why?

I like the Bird Shot I only had a couple of seconds to get the shot as he flew away moments later. I like shooting the great blue heron as I am still in search of the great shot of that type of bird. It always seems to elude me. I do agree with you, after looking at shot 2 some more, it is kind of messy.
