Kingfisher Diving Sequence - Tamron 500mm
Lens: Tamron BB 500mm Camera: K5 Photo Location: Shanghai Aperture: F8
Posted By: Frogfish, 02-18-2011, 02:13 PM

There is a little man made stream that runs through our compound, not more than 18 inches (ca. 45cm) deep anywhere except where it empties into a pool containing huge goldfish. However that doesn't deter a pair of Kingfishers from coming here to fish (and I've spotted them for at least the last 3-4 years now).

This is the first time I've been able to shoot them - and even then the closest I could get was 35m before these noisy starling like birds start up their warning calls and panic everything around them !

Anyway, I was so excited to see them that I had to post - regardless that I know they are barely keepers never mind post-able ! These were all taken from around 40m away and are heavily cropped of course.

The Female Fishing :-

1. On Your Marks

2. Get Set

3. Go !

4. Mach One

5. Houston - We Have Entry

6. Mission Impossible - But The Boy Is Back In Town (Poor quality but I like the pose) !

7. So I'd Better Make Myself Pretty ! (Poor quality but I like the pose) !

8. Looking Good Baby ! (Poor quality but I like the pose) !

9. The Male

10. A Reason to Leave .... Pronto !

Hi Frogfish, I like the series, especially 1,3,4 and 9. However, I am very disappointed that my favorite 10, is not in focus

You may have missed the cat a bit, the fisher missed his target also but you have an interesting series of photos that I enjoyed viewing. I liked the narrative, funny and the fact the male which is well photographed, is just sitting there and watching. My wife says that is typical. thanks Bob

Thanks altopiet ! I'm afraid my MF skills are not that quick yet - by the time I saw what the cat was going to so I was too late to pre-focus !

Thank you Tess - I'm glad you enjoyed them. I just love this pair of kingfishers so hope I see much more of them this Spring.

BTW - the way to tell the male and female apart is from the lower mandible - the female's has a red patch whereas the male's is pure black.

Great series, good story, glad you posted them! It is not always about the perfect IQ, it is about the story, the intrigue.
I love those little birdies! I wish we had them here!
Best Regards!

Thank you Scott. Amazingly I went to another park in Shanghai today and found another pair of Kingfishers - I'll be posting some of those later this week.
