Hunting Island SP, SC
Camera: K-7
Posted By: slowpez, 02-26-2011, 09:49 AM

This state park is located near Beaufort, SC the home of such films as "The Great Santini" and "Prince of Tides". Pat Conroy is from Beaufort in case the movie names didn't give you a small hint.
The beach at Hunting Island is being reclaimed by the sea and so far efforts to save it have not worked. It is a shame as it is beautiful.

All but one beach house has not met the same fate as this one.

The designs left in the sands can be quite beautiful

Susan, it must be a money thing with the state I would assume, but many groups would love it to go back to original I would assume. Will there still be access or is that being closed also? Nice series, love the coast. Bob

The campground is open but beach sites are limited but plenty of other sites to be had. Much of the area around where the cabins used to be are closed including the area of the cabin posted here. Several other cabins are in the process of being demolished.
The beach itself will remain until it ends up in another state. Lots of complaints if they refurbish and if they don't. You just can't make everybody happy in these situations.

In CA, Pismo Beach is in a natural state and not really maintained. There are large dunes to ride ATVs, we have gone off roading in the Jeep in the sand, got real stuck of course, and you are allowed to drive on the beach. Debris from the ocean is not cleaned up and when a whale, seal or other wildlife dies, they are not generally removed or even buried. Camping is also allowed, it is an interesting area to visit but can get a bit smelly in places.
Dave, I went to a "Garden Party" once. Bob

Thanks Charlie and Scott. Bob, I think I'll leave Pismo Beach to you.

Great series, Susan.
I like them all, but I love the second one.
Gives a bit of a feeling like you're on a deserted island and suddenly you discover it's not as deserted as you thought it was. (sorry, I've got a vivid imagination and watch too many movies I guess).

A very satisfying series, Susan. Our "local" Surfside Beach is also under assault from the sea (with alot of recent help from Hurricane Ike). Restoration efforts are underway, but I worry that Texas' huge budget deficit will dry up funds for continued work.
