A few flowers
Posted By: mikeatnite, 10-18-2007, 02:01 AM

A few flower shots taken over the last couple months. Critiques would be most welcome as I am eager to improve at this.

Sorry, can't offer criticism as I think they're gorgeous. The one with the little katydid or whatever is just spectacular - the DOF is fantastic. Well done, and thanks for sharing.

I also cant offer any criticism.. the shots are just beautiful. I really enjoy the first shot. May I inquire what lens you shot these with?

Gorgeous! The only thing I would say is to maybe brighten up the first one. The white flower.

Truly quite stunning! The first 2 are excellent.. and the first, with the water droplets and the tiny reflections is just snazzy!

Very impressive macro shots. Particularly like the shot with the grasshopper, (or whatever it is). Would you give details of the lens etc. you used? What criticism? Very well done

For #1, did you bring a water bottle with you? Or did you find it like that? Also, what's the orginal color of the flower?

The selective coloring you had to pp on the water drop looks time consuming... well done!

thanks for the kind words everyonel - very encouraging

Bruce and qdoan - these were done with the DFA 100 Macro. Shot in harsh mid day sun and that is why the background went to black.

AVANT - I did not bring a water bottle. They just turned off the sprinklers at the botanical garden so I ran up quickly and snapped this little flower. It is actually red with a white center just like in the photo. I did not change the color of the water drop - it just came out that way, I think a reflection from the red center?

Intriguing, the flower looked gray enough to confuse me (as you can tell). Well done.

I would have liked to see more depth of field in the first shot so that all the petals and drops were in focus. The other two shots are great as they are, IMO. Great work!

Forgive me if I disagree in this case, TaoMaas - I like the extremely shallow DOF. I think if everything had been in focus it would have been a much more ordinary, "garden catalogue" sort of shot.

You're forgiven. I just find that soft section in the upper left a bit distracting. But I'll admit that's being pretty nitpicky.

Hi TaoMass, thanks for the feedback. I tried different apertures starting at F2.8 up through F8 to see how things turned out and actually the one with most DOF at F8 (the one posted above) came out the best. Would be interesting to see what would have happened if I had tried smaller apertures. I try to experiment by toying back and forth with the F value so I can get a firmer grasp on the relationships between distance, aperture, DOF. Thanks again.
