Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota
Camera: K-x Photo Location: Black Hills, SD
Posted By: Bob Harris, 03-01-2011, 09:52 PM

Photos from Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Scientists tell us that Spearfish Canyon was formed 30 to 60 million years ago. Originally, a great sea covered this area. When the waters started to subside, the canyon was carved out by water eroding away the softer rock. The land was also pushed up from underneath by volcanic action. After many years, the water carved out the channel now called "Spearfish Canyon".

I expect to see a Leprechaun or dancing Fairies in the last photo, it is so surreal.
Thanks for sharing your views of South Dakota.

Beautiful shots Bob. Did you know that one of the Christmas trees for Washington DC was harvested from Spearfish and some of the movie "Dances with Wolves" was filmed there?
That double rainbow shot is awesome.

Another nice series. Perhaps I will meet Rocky Raccoon when I am in the area in early July.

I knew about Wolves, we took a drive out to where it was filmed, but not the Christmas Tree. One interesting thing about the Black Hills/Spearfish area, is that with all of the lakes and streams there were no native fish. They were introduced into the area by transplanting trout from Yellowstone by Federal Fish and Game in the late 1890's.

The Black Hills should be beautiful again this year, lots of snow and rain will keep that area green all summer and there are several waterfalls in the Spearfish Canyon that should be flowing well. thanks for looking. Bob
