Winter at the Zoo
Lens: DA*16-50, DA*60-250 Camera: K5d Photo Location: Granby Zoo, Canada

I went for a winter visit of the Zoo, had a pretty good time! Animals have their winter coats and are more active in winter.

First is a friendly Alpaca

DA*60-250 @ 153mm, 1/350, F13, ISO400

Next, hungry hungry hippo! (he was in an aquarium with very dirty glass)

DA*60-250 @ 140mm, 1/350, F4, ISO6400

Maccaw Parrots (shot thru scratched plexiglass)

DA*16-50 @ 45mm, 1/125, F2.8, ISO 140

Tigger! (Oops I mean tiger!, shot thru plexiglass)

DA*60-250 @ 250mm, 1/350, F13, ISO 800

A well groomed camel in his winter coat

DA*60-250 @ 128mm, 1/350, F11, ISO 800

And finally I think this is a Jaguar in it's winter coat (Correction it's a Snow Leopard!, Thanks Maxs)

DA*60-250 @ 153mm, 1/350, f5.6, ISO 200

Thanks for looking!

Pat

Very nice images, love the Hippo and the Jaguar most but all are good, thanks for posting them. Back in 1960-63 we used to take our son to the Granby Zoo but it was nothing like this, at that time they had mostly domestic animals.

Great zoo shots, Pat. The last one is a classic.

I really really like these! You have caught some great expressions on the animals faces. Love the first, that one really captured my heart!

Very nice series - I always like seeing zoo shots, some don't.

The tiger is a great shot - very regal looking. Love the Jaguar too but think it would be much better if you cut a bit of black off the top & maybe a bit of the blown highlighted snow off the bottom (and maybe create a landscape 8x10 of the centre portion).

Great looking animals and you managed some good shots even through dirty plexiglass. Love it when the animals are more active as it seems to be easier to get more natural shots. Well done.

Scott ... Thanks, I love seeing animals in their winter coats and colours.

Heinrich ... Thank you! I was surprised I managed to get a few good shot of the hippo shooting thru glass (2 of them live in a massive aquarium), and the water is murky as they drag in lots of dirt and hay from their "dry" beach.

Sailor ... Thanks Jer! It's my favorite from the whole weekend! It's one of the few pics that looks like it was not taken in a cage.

Tessfully ... Thanks! The funny thing is that as I walked up to their pen I was calling them Llamas and singing La-la-la-la-Lama! (to La Bamba)... and then I see the sign... Alpacas! I think that pic is one of them saying: "yeah! I'm an Alpaca! Get it right you bald primate!" =D

Frogfish ... Thanks! I find Zoo shots are usualy pretty hit and miss. It's so hard to make it look like the animals are not captive. And for the last pic yes I agree, and I have a much tighter crop of it to print for my collection. Sadly I can't landscape it as the snow on it's sides is just as blown out, and the cropping is to hide the cage bars.

Slowpez ... Thank you! It was my first winter visit to this zoo and I was not disappointed. I just wish the Plexiglas was in better condition and cleaner.

Maxs ... Ah so it is a Snow Leopard!? I was not sure and took a chance. I should really take pics of the exhibit signs when I visit!

Pat
