Today's Moon shot
Posted By: Mr Hyde, 10-20-2007, 07:04 PM

I was busy all day and didn't get any time behind the camera so I ventured out into the backyard and shot this over my house. Any comments are welcome.

K10D and Sigma 50-500mm @500mm
f/11, 125th sec, ISO 200

Nice detail Scott - I took one yesterday looks almost the same (cept your PP was way better than mine) I like it.

Thanks. My PP was only a tweak using the unsharp mask command in Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 (strength 75, the rest were defaults). Oh and of course the croping.

Hey Scott,

Because the moon is so far away, perhaps you could drop the aperture (subject is already at infinity) and therefore increase the shutter speed. That might help sharpen things up for you. Did you do a mirror lockup and remote cable release, or... ?

Regards,
Marc

Thanks Marc, I used the 3 second timer so I wouldnt be touching the camera when it took the shot. I'll try your suggestion tonight if it's clear and bump up the shutter speed a bit. The las ttime I took a moon photo the moon was full and I think I my shutter was at 1/500th.

My apologies! A little sharpening on this image would be excellent - I think you've done well!

Cheers,
Marc

The last one seems softer than the original. It's a nice shot.

I took this one tonight and sharpened it. Yours seems a bit clearer....this was w/Sigma 50-500 and the 1.4tc, (700mm) no crop. f/8, 1/250, ISO 160:

Not sure. There seems slightly more detail in the first one, although the second seems slightly less noisy.

Either way, to my mind, yours are, without a doubt, by far the best moon shots posted on this forum in recent months.

I like both of them Scott. I just wish I had the lens to do what you do with these shots. Very nice job.

Assuming shake is not an issue, a faster shutter speed than 1/125 won't make an appreciable difference to the sharpness in the context of movement blur.

You might care to have a look at my calculations in this post; at 1/125s, the movement is only a very small fraction of a pixel (about 1/25).

If lens performance is worse at the wider aperture you'll have to use, the result will be worse, all other things being equal.

Wow, moonshots are really hot these days... in another post I have put my last result... one may find it too on my site (and then click twice on the small moon). Now, it's cloudy here. I am afraid I'll miss the full moon!

Wow, thanks Chris. To be honest I was getting a bit discouraged due to the lack of comments. I just assumed that everyone was being polite and not telling me that my shots were below par. I'm new to this photography thing so my confidence is a bit lacking at times.

The first shot at the beginning of this post got a little sharpening in PSPPx2
The second one got some digital noise removal + sharpening.

I'll keep practicing and hopefully my technique will improve over time.
