Strangely this is a shot of a Red Rose which when I applied contrast and dropped back the brightness as I usually do with a lot of shots created this effect.

Wow, that is wild, you didn't run it through any type of other program? I have taken a few rose shots and others with my macro lens and will see if I can get the same effect, just for the fun of it. I wonder if has to do with the color of red only, interesting and thanks Bob
