Spotted the two trees right away. Was this a controlled burn and is that two birds nest in the subject trees? JIM

Gorgeous photo Rense, was this an accidental fire or a prescribed burn? If prescribed what would be the reason behind it? Are not the heathlands normally protected areas?

It was a controlled burn, Jim. It's in a military heathland area in our artillery shooting range. Sod cutting is impossible because of the unexploded ammunition (Projectile | Flickr - Photo Sharing!), so they have to burn it to keep the area open. It's done in winter, to prevent to much damage to the animals (like breeding birds).....
