I had never seen this one before. I think it was a nice object to photograph

Shots are made with a K10D with a Sigma 50 mm macro lens

Looks like a form or Protea (South African plant/flower)

I took a number of these in the botanical gardens recently not too far from my place as well.

Yep, that is exactly what it is, a Protea.
Have a collection of them at the Botanic Gardens where I do a bit of work.

I think it's a King Protea, which is the National Flower of South Africa. About 20cm across? There are literally hundreds of species of Protea, so it's hard to say which one if it's smaller than that.
