Pentax in the Rain
Lens: DA*300 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Shanghai
Posted By: Frogfish, 03-29-2011, 08:24 AM

Well I did want to try it out .... nervous though I was. So one rainy day last month I went for a long stroll through the Shanghai Botanical Garden.

Most of the time I had the DA*300 on the K5 but on occasion I also got out the K7 (with an non-WR Tamron 17-50 on it - and a plastic bag over the lense ).

I have to say I was feeling pretty pleased with myself as the rain came down and I strolled past a handful of Canon / Nikon bird shooters sheltering under the awning of a cafe. One of the them shouted out ... "hey what about your camera in the rain" ..... "it's a Pentax" was my reply.

It really was a miserable day, though walking in the Gardens in the rain was much better than being at home watching afternoon TV (or being stuck under an awning) !

Excuse the title on this shot - it was actually February, the same day as the other shots. My mistake. #1, #2 & #4 were K7 & Tamron 17-50/2.8, #3, #5 & #6 were the K5 & DA*300.

Wonderful! The second, first and last in that order are the ones I like best. They have a special atmosphere about them, you couldn't have captured that on an standard sunny day...

Kevin, what a beautiful area to photograph and you certainly captured it well. How often do you see the ladies wearing the traditional clothing, I have always admired it. thanks for sharing your day. Bob

nice shots!

btw, got any good routines on how to avoid droplets on the lens? I've been having some trouble during both rain and snow, the stuff is homing to my lens like red wine on a clean shirt.

Wow - you exploited the rainy day to capture some very rich color, not to mention captivating compositions. Nice work.

LOVE IT! I've had much the same experience, but never replied with such a simple bold statement.

#1 and #2 are my favorites.

Barcon, Bob, DP, Jim, thorwb, Jer, Mike - thank you all for your comments, much appreciated !

Bob - traditional clothing - not that often in daytime but you do see them used for parties / evening wear and I agree, I absolutely love Oriental girls in traditional clothes (but I actually think those costumes above are Japanese - so I've no idea what they were up to but anyway they didn't have feathers so I didn't follow them to find out !

thorwb - rain on lenses : #1 - don't point the camera up ! When birding this is actually less difficult than it sounds as 45 degrees still works OK. The DA*300 has a very deep hood so it's not an issue at all with that lense, however for the Tamron 17-50, used in 3 shots above, the hood is very shallow but since the lense is used mainly for landscapes / portraits then judicious use of a monopod and hand or other protective object over the top helps ! Of course it's important to ensure no water gets into non-WR lenses so they should be kept in some form of plastic bag (especially over the camera mount area) anyway.

Mike - glad you liked the comeback.

Those first three are stunning frogfish. What a neat place to take photos. Of course you used a Pentax. Wonderful response.

Kevin, the photos with the K7 are so much better to me than the K5 photos, I would assume this is due to the lens selection and lighting. Just curious what you think, thanks Bob

Thank you Susan - glad you enjoyed them !

Thank you for your kind words Aaronius ! Shanghai is truly an amazing city - full of contrasts.

Thank you Tamia - very pleased you enjoyed my work !

Bob : K7 vs K5. Personally I should say that I like #1 and #6 the best ... and of course that's one from each camera ! The only shot that I think has been adversely affected by the weather was the two ladies in traditional clothing - they were about 70yds away so obviously the rain and cropping will have negatively impacted the shot. Other than that maybe it's personal preference ? 17-50 vs 300 is a huge focal length difference that is going to produce vastly different type of shots.
