Field of Abandoned Dreams
Posted By: Tamia, 03-31-2011, 06:01 AM

I discovered an extensive auto graveyard hidden in the woods, its extent invisible from passersby. It's amazing how these old vehicles were being consumed by nature. I only had about half an hour to explore, unfortunately, and as I was shooting these, I was thinking how these vehicles were once shiny new vehicles, with owners who drove them with expectation and pride.

That litle kildare reminds me of the car the rogues use in The Warriors film.
Cool place to go and shoot till your eyes bleed (or your batteries die).

Thanks very much for your comments, guys. I appreciate 'em. This is a fascinating place, and I'll try to visit again sometime. Bob, these are for you:

Used Car for Sale: Needs a Little Work

That early Ford Van ('52/53?) is a VERY rare beast. One was restored in Aus recently....made MASSIVE money.
I wonder if this one will ever be lucky enough to have the same fortune.
Top images, Pickles.

HDR?

Where were these taken, eg. country.

Are all of the images HDR?

Shooting old auto can be fun, but I found out that they can be home to snakes, and not the fun, we love you and want to be your friend, kind of snake.

Thanks, Martin! Maybe I should try to find the owner and make an offer on that Ford . In fact, I was wondering then if this one could be restored. It's in bad shape, but the body metal is in remarkably good condition. Newer vehicles don't fare nearly as well and rot out very quickly.

Boy you have that right. I'm going to try and spend more time there next week. And I always carry spare batteries!

No HDR in any of them. I just adjusted curves, contrast, saturation, and levels. The Sigma 10-20 is a great lens for this kind of photography. I was very conscious of the hazards, but was more concerned about stepping into a hidden hole (grasses had fallen over hollows) than snakes or wasps, since it was around the freezing temperature. I'd like to have had enough courage to step into some of those cars to shoot from the inside out.

The 52/53 Ford Van!
The van body....that's what got me.....sure, it's not pristine....but it's all there (the Van part).....mechanical bits are identical to other Fords of the era, so shouldn't present much of a problem..........but hey, it would be a BBIIIIIGGG task!
Cheers, Pickles.

A true handyman's project, wouldn't you say, Martin? Looks like plenty of good metal, though...
