Park Rapids, Minnesota

We visited this small town while camping near Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the Mississippi River. What we found is a town of 3000 people had really not changed over the years. It has been a long time since we saw parking in the middle of the street to accommodate its citizens. Why park on a side street when you can park in the middle and go directly to the store you want. The town was founded in the 1880s as a logging town. The interior of the East Forty diner was decorated with old farm memorabilia and a 1918 Fordson tractor sits in the corner to view.

Neat shots Bob......the last one has great "small town" looks. There are a few small towns in Texas that have not lost their flavor, but not many. The trend is to make them into "Historic" centers to attract tourists.
Regards!

Brings back memories, Bob. I remember parking like that in parts of the little town in Illinois where I grew up. And it is convenient - no need to walk a mile to a mall from a distant parking lot. Here in Lake Jackson, downtown parking is still like this - it's handy, but there are few things downtown (other than the barber and public library) that I need to visit regularly.

Jer, I grew up in the small town of Victorville CA, but we didn't have the convenience of parking in the middle of the street like that. Highway 66 ran directly in front of our house and through the town, great place though to "Get Our Kicks" when we were kids. Bob

You're in my home territory now Bob! I was born on a farm just down the road (15 mintues) from Park Rapids in the small town of Menahga, MN. We'd go to the PR for movies and groceries since our town only had a small general store.

Many of my family still live in Menahga and Park Rapids. I travel there every summer for the 4th of July. They call it Midsummer there and have festivals and parades.

I wouldn't want to live there now (the mountains are in my blood), but it is a good place to be from.

The fishing is incredible!

I like to see that someone is using the old movie house.

But if this is Minnesota, where is the SNOW? It snows there until Aug., stops for 2 min, and then winter!
