Virgin River Gorge
Photo Location: Littlefield, AZ
Posted By: Bob Harris, 04-04-2011, 08:22 PM

Photos are from our campsite on the Virgin River looking north than south of the gorge carved from the Virgin River. Photo two also shows a semi traveling on the I 15 west towards Nevada giving you an idea of how massive this gorge is. The Virgin River also flows through Zion NP and carved the gorge there. This is a primative campground, no hookups, but with views like this, we always enjoy our stay.

I think I turned into one camping area as I passed through, but it was a bad choice photographically and got nothing. I remember the area was spectacular where there was no turnout or parking....

Amazing colors in the different rock formations. Sparse vegetation, lots of clean air, beautiful starry nights? Almost like the Karoo

Not completely like the Karoo, certainly crystal clear lights at this location, but no sheep in the area. I have never been in South Africa, but have read a bit about the history and especially about the wars there. Thanks for viewing and stirring my memory. Bob

Great shots, Bob. I see a tank truck in the second one that gives this big gorge some scale - it is a whopper!

Another series from our favorite part of the US. Thanks for sharing them Bob. We will have to look up that CG when we go out west next. BLM land?

Here is another link to a forum that has campground reviews, very helpful for planning.

Barry, see what happens when you forget and leave the water on at Zion, it all goes downhill, thanks Bob

Kyle, sounds like you were in the right place, you just have to go down into the cg towards the river for a better view. I know what you mean about the freeway, best views but you can't stop. thanks
