BIF in St. David

We are currently camped in the Sonora desert, but a natural artesian well feeds a pond in the campground which attracts many migrating birds, and I happened to catch these birds taking off. It happened so quickly that I was surprised I got any focus at all.
NOTE: I am not sure what type/name of duck this is, any help would be appreciated. thanks Bob

Very nice Bob. I have no idea what kind of birds those are unless they are blue winged teal. My husband calls all ducks blue winged teals so that he doesn't have to identify any of them.

I'll add one in the series of the ducks taking flight, these guys are fast.

Ducks fly really fast Bob - as you have found out ! #1 is a good shot though !

They look like Spot-billed Ducks - the body, wing & tail colouring seems perfect but the bill is the confusing part - it should be black with a yellow tip, and unless the light is bouncing off them, it looks more yellow than black. Definitely NOT Blue Winged Teals (the bill, head & wing colouring are all wrong).

thanks Susan for commenting, glad you liked the photos, I think they are something else though, not quite the same markings. Bob

You know your birds, so I will go with you, I will check with some people in the campground to see what they think. Thanks so much for commenting, shooting these guys is like being in a gunfight, you better be ready. Bob

Looks pretty good to me, Bob - particularly #1. As I lamented in one of Susan's recent posts - I think BIF shots are beyond my meager abilities.

These are easy to shoot, just close your eyes and pull he trigger. Thanks Bob
