Here's what I've been thinking. An HDR flattens out the histogram by default, effectively reducing contrast by pushing what would normally be the darkest and lightest pixels toward the middle.
But by tweaking the levels or curves of an HDR to bump up the contrast, or even by pushing the mid point of the histogram to the left of centre, one could reap the benefits of the high dynamic range of an HDR, without the, IMHO tell-tale weakness of many of the HDR images I've seen kicking around. B&W is the perfect place to do this, since realism is easier to maintain.
Tim your images have very good contrast...but I wanted to see what they'd look like pushed even further, so they don't even come across as an HDR:
