Great capture.

Looks like you tripped the shutter when they held a static pose right in front of you. Did you anticipate where they would freeze or was it luck?

Also, have you tried a close crop that trims the ceiling and the dark rectangle at the bottom (is it a seat)?

Regards,
--Anders.

I did anticipate that they were going to do something (but what, I didn't know), and I was tracking them. Once I had an idea I started shooting, burst mode on the K-r is awesome

As for close crop, I was keeping the original ratio, but you're right - a square crop would probably work. The dark rectangle is a speaker.

Nice shot ! Definitely needs a square crop to take out the wasted space at the top and the shadow at the bottom.

... and now I totally want that Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 I had such a hard time taking photos because the lights weren't bright enough and the people were moving too fast a lot of the time! High ISO = lots of noise

IMO you would be better off with a constant aperture prime or zoom.

The Sigma 50-150/2.8 (if you can find one new - if not they are worth hunting down Used), is much cheaper than the DA*50-135, and has fast, quiet HSM, or even the Tamron 17-50/2.8, if you are close enough, which is superb value for money. Also the Tamron 28-75/2.8 is around the same price and maybe the perfect lense. The DA*35 macro maybe enough too and it's probably the cheapest option without going MF.

However if the light is really bad and flash not permitted then the Sigma 30/1.4 is cut your throat sharp in the centre and easily cropped if necessary.

Hmm, that's an interesting option - the Tamron 17-50 f2.8...

I was looking for a more all-in-one lens to use 95% of the time, which is why the Sigma 17-70 was very appealing (a bit more zoom than the kit 18-55). However it appears that the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is a similar price, and well, constant 2.8 which is pretty cool. Offers a little less zoom though, and as it stands I'm finding the 55mm a little limiting... Decisions, decisions!

From what I've read MF is really difficult with the K-r due to lack of split prism, and I don't really want to modify the camera...

Go to the Sigma & Tamron Lenses thread here on PF and check out what each of the lenses (17-70, 17-50 & 28-75 can do, some superb shots in there).

DLSRs don't come with split prisms (these are focusing screens you can exchange for the stock screen later if you wish), I think you mean the Kr has a pentamirror not a pentaprism viewfinder and it also has less coverage and lower magnification - all factors that may influence manual focusing for some people.
