the black background definitely makes the orchid stand out better. Nice shot.

thanks Scott!

I agree, the contrast is much greater. I wish I could've kept the stem in the shot. My guess is that I didn't have enough light.

Yes, I like the black background much better, nice shot, especially getting the background pure black. What was the background material?

Thanks! Material is a black t-shirt. I have a picture of the setup, I'll post that in a few.

here's my setup...I have a floor lamp with three bulbs that I had angled to light it up from the left as well as a tripod. All really simple and free, though I'm thinking about getting one of those portable worklights to get some more light.

Great set-up and the results were very good. Like the others, I also believe the black background was preferable to make the bloom stand out more. I'd like to see you try some more shots and vary the lighting to see what other modeling effects you can produce and whether or not you can include some of that stem.

excellent little setup.

#1 is superior to the black. It's much better framed, the orchid has complementary space around it; the black one is cramped. However, #1's cool white doesn't complement the orchid's slightly warm white. The black to me is attempt at maximum contrast without understanding how subtle colours can achieve nicer, striking results. Sometimes.

Compositions like this tend to be striking when the background and flower subject are identical hues, creating minimalism. Alternately, pastel shades of complementary colours may create a pleasing colour composition: try a pastel blue, beige or yellow in your simple setup. Thirdly, try a brilliant yellow picking up on the orchid's center.

thanks Don!

I really like the idea about the pastels...once I get a chance I'll be heading to the paper store to find some poster board pastel and yellow.
