A couple of things to watch for is to straighten the horizon (otherwise all the water runs out...!!

) and don't be frightened to get your knees wet or sandy. That means try getting down to the waters level for a different perspective occasionally.
The rule of thirds is often offered as a must do...but as with all rules, its very existence invites trangression. Never be frightened to experiment, the great thing about digital.
Also have a look behind you because sometimes the light playing on other things presents great opportunities.
Did you use a tripod / monopod or hand held? I find a monopod a constant companion.
