Fending off every creature that would come near his chicks. Even the Canadian Geese are not nearly as agressive as those coots.

I'm not usually a fan of bird photography in general, but this is outstanding!

I'm not a big birder either, but that is indeed a great capture. I'd claim it in a second. Good job.

I am a fan of bird photos and you have produced a winner...especially how the feathers of the right wing provide a backdrop for the head.

Thanks for sharing.

Stunning!

There's so little room for composition when shooting wildlife and so when we find something with expression and lighting and composition in one scene I'd call that a winner!

Great shot!
Glad you posted it.

I like a good bird shot because I know how difficult it can be to get them, this is excellent.

Lovely shot freezing the moment. I'm amazed that there's so little apparent noise considering that it was 1000 ISO.

K-r magic and Lightroom 3 doing it''s job. At ISO 1000 I only need to move the luminance noise slider between 35 and 40 to get most of the noise removed. Could even go somewhat lower because of the low noise in the RAW-image without noise reduction applied.

With the K-r I just set my camera to Auto ISO (max ISO 2500) and getting those shots at 1/2000s is that much easier. I won't have to think about changing ISO values and just concentrate on getting the shots I want.

For me the most amazing is the sharpness wide open at 500mm, even at 1:1 I can see good detail on the coot and some real sharp water bubbles.

Initially I did not read the lens specs. I kept think great capture but does this guy have no brains? Getting that close to that feathered passion.

Now that I see 500mm, wide open it is a fantastic shot.
