Cannes film festival
ISO: 50
Posted By: jonny1986, 05-23-2011, 02:31 PM

i have been 2 weeks freelancing at cannes for magazine and an italian agency.
the festival is an amaizng experience with tons of photo ops. But you must have a press pass or you struggle a lot or simply you must change perspective and try to look at the festival not only as celebrity's photo.
I use my pentax syste, Unlikely i started without the 50-135, that is my preferred lens and most useful or this kind of event. In addition the first 20 minutes i was hit by a car in the street and my 16-50 2,8 and 540 flash are gone, broken. likely my k5 was saved.
so i ll rest after the first 20 minutes with

k5 and k7
18-55 II kit
10-20 sigma
8-16 sigma
35 pentax
55
70
105 macro
200 pentax

and 2 metz flash.
i have to say that i missed a lot a longer lens, and my 2 zoom and so a full analisys of the pentax system is not really possible for this event. But i'll try to focus on what worked anbd what not

- Iq of k5 is amazing. 16 million are a lot and good for crop.
- k5 pushing capabilities of shadow at base iso act like a fill flash in many circumstances, and in high contrast sitution is amazing
-k7 while good is far behnd the k5. simply put i cannot shoot it anymore. so another k5 is on its way
.-primes are nice but zoom are vtal for these situations. the 200 is amazing, a part a hint of LOCA in the bokeh, but most of the time i was a bit long. the sigma 8-16 is simply amazing.
-metering and flash exposure has been in general very good with just a bit of overexposure in some stuation. I have to sya that i shoot with some nikon user and i was amazed sometimes how off their metering was, considering how higlhy praised is nikon metering system. It could have been an error user.
- Af worked well but suffered in some situtation, especially people coming towards me fast. But this could be to my use of 2,8 aperture and probbably a bit of front focus. 7 frames are amazing and help a lot. sdm while spot on is a bit too slow and i hope in the future pentax will release new fastesr sdm2.
-sigma flash was spot for filling shadow, but not perfect for principal light.
-k5 shutter sound was praised by many pro using nikon and canon.

all in all pentax k5 was a good tool. I need my zooms back and probably a lens like 60-250 f4. I'm still undecided to add a nikon system for these events. i need to test pentax a bit more.

here some samples:

Did you say you got hit by a car? That sucks, hope you are OK and are going to sue them and get some new lenses.
Great shots, beautiful people, fancy cars and boats!

yes i was hit by a car. i denounced it cause the guy didnt want to make a spontaneous declaration, so it will take time but i hope to solve the things. But it really sucked cause i am really a great confident on the 16-50, especially when i use it with flash. it's like a seond eye for me.
