I love this kind of abstract shot - particularly in B&W. Cool one, Bob.

Hey Bob, my approach is pretty straightforward. For posting, I convert RAW files directly to high quality JPEGs; prior to conversion, I adjust exposure (if necessary) and - when thinking of B&W - I'll typically bump contrast (using curves) a bit more than I would do with a color shot.

I PP the resulting JPEG using PSP X2's "Black and White Film" tool in the "Effects" menu by picking a filter color that jives with my intentions (for example, yellow or orange to yield a dark sky with fluffy clouds). The tool also contains a brightness adjustment and a "Clarify" function which (I believe) provides a combination of increased constrast and sharpness - I use both brightness and Clarify (sparingly) if I think that doing so adds some punch to the shot.

I then resize the file for posting and usually add a bit more sharpening.

I know there are other (and probably better) ways to produce B&W pics, but this method is quick, simple and - for me - sufficient.

thanks Jer, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I haven't used the filter color element, nor the curves for contrast either. I think that will help give a better appearance to the photos. I have tried to shoot in RAW, but just don't have the patience or knowledge to get the sharp images that you always get. Looks like I will give it a try again and see what I come up with. Bob

Bob - I'm not sure you need much help - as I said in my first reply, this pic looks very good to me.

Good to hear, Bob. I want to pinstripe the mower and add a set of Cragers.
