Joplin, MO thunderstorm
Lens: DA 35mm f2.4 AL Camera: Pentax K-7 Photo Location: Buffalo, MO ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F4

Since the tornado that destroyed much of Joplin, MO is still on CNN I thought I might upload and share this image. This was taken of the same thunderstorm that spawned the tornado about two hours later as the sun was setting.

Wow - awesome view!

After all that happened with the tornados, I'm glad you picked up your camera for the shot.

I hope you are yours are OK.

Thank you. We were okay this time. A tornado took out half of the gearbox factory 200m behind my house a few years ago and all I lost that time was my lawn furniture and some trees. There have been a lot more tornadoes this year than I usually remember, I think the news this morning said it was almost double last year's amount.

Beauty and destruction from the same cloud of water vapour. Makes you think about things doesn't it.

Lovely photo.

After seeing the sorts of things you folks have to put up with, I am forever glad I live in a fairly stable region.

Thank you for the kind comments.

More tornadoes hit Missouri a few hours ago. The radio has been carrying news of more injuries in Sedalia, MO but so far no deaths. I think Oklahoma had a few killed yesterday... Weather is rather bizarre at the moment.

Pretty epic looking. It would have been great to have a more interesting silhouette foreground though!

Thanks for the comments. I agree the foreground could have been better. By the time I ran outside with my camera and got the lens cap off I knew I only had a few seconds before the clouds changed. I took about ten images in less than a minute and this is the first one taken. The other nine didn't have the contrast and depth in the clouds, so framing the light pole and trees like that from my front yard was the best I could do in a short time period.

Maybe I will look for a different spot to shoot from around my yard. Like a pre-planned shooting location where I choose the silhouette ahead of time for my next sunset image. I'm just happy I got the settings right and the horizon leveled on the fly. I definitely appreciate suggestions though because I rarely shoot sunsets directly like this.
