Believe it or not the 80-200/2.8 is a very good choice... some studio work I did back in March of this year. Took this shot during a lull in the posing.

Sample image - title is "Waning Enthusiasm":

100% crop:

Sometimes, but not always, my FA* 80-200/2.8 is a fantastic portrait lens... you just stand a little further away...

Cheers,
Marc

This is just an awesome capture. My wife and I both stepped away from my monitor and ooohed... and awwwed at the image.

My noob question: how exactly do you do a crop like this? Do you simply zoom in until you get the image you want, thereby cropping the rest?

Very nice, but I dont understand the not common part, 80-200 and 70-200 are common for portraits imo. The 50-135 is even being called a portrait zoom.

Thanks James! She was a hoot, such a real treat to work with. I'd never done images of kids before, and I plan to do more portraiture as time permits - especially with the departure of DST and the upcoming late fall/winter hours of more darkness.

The first is roughly 33% of actual image size. The second image is simply at 100% of the actual digital image size. I cropped the face, etc. intentionally like this to show the details.

I agree completely! It's the FA* 80-200/2.8 that is not a common lens...

Actually I'd like to try the 50-135/2.8, since it's much lighter and quieter.

Cheers,
Marc

oops, forgot to mention - the first image is...

Part of the Pentax Photo Gallery.

This image was a big favorite with the selection folks of the Pentax Photo Gallery - they even made comments about it in an e-mail! I was really surprised by that...

I've seen these on your profile in the gallery, Marc - nice portraits.

For those interested in this lens, there are a few (give or take) on ebay from a reputable seller (from japan). Expect to pay somewhere around $2500!

I like her expression - priceless.
