Trap Focus Hummingbirds - Part 2
Lens: DA* 300mm Camera: K5
Posted By: SanMat, 06-23-2011, 08:57 PM

Two more recent shots of some Annas hummingbirds using catch in focus mode. Shot with K5, DA 300mm, on tripod. A bit more noise with these, but for ISO 3200 not too bad. Specs for both were f/6.3, 1/1600 sec., ISO 3200.

Comments welcome.

Pete

Awesome!

I typed that in capital letters, but the website converted it to mixed case.

I'm impressed with the clarity at that ISO. I've got to get a K5! Great job.

Very nice photos Pete, great stop action on her. Do the Anna's stay there year round and have you noticed their nests? Thanks for sharing these wonderful birds. Bob

Tamia,

Thanks. The K5 is much better at higher ISOs that K20D and K7. No question. Just so you know these have had noise reduction applied.

I use Dfine, which is a plug-in for lightroom.

Thanks,

Appreciate the kind words. As I mentioned to Tamia, I did use noise reduction for these (Dfine), though even without the noise reduction the high-ISO output of the K5 is much improved over K7 and K20D. My limit for those cameras was about 1600. Even at 1600 those are pretty noisy. For the K5, I've gotten usable images at ISO 6400 with good light.

Crew1,

Thanks for the kind words. It's my most used lens. On an aps-c sensor the 300mm (450mm equivalent) is just about ideal for these type of shots. I can set the camera up, or shoot handheld from within 10 feet without bothering the birds, and that is plenty close enough to pull out the detail.

The K5 sensor also helps bring out the qualities of the DA* 300mm very nicely.

Thanks again Bob.

Here in the Bay Area the Annas do stay around all year. Their specific activity around my place ebbs and flows but they're always around. To this point they're the only species of hummingbird I've seen here. As for nests, I suspect there may be one or two in a tree next door to us. When I'm out walking I notice their activity more often around large bushes than trees, though I've hardly done any real study of them.

Spectacular results Pete.
No comments necessary other than 'brilliant work'.
One of the best hummingbird captures I've seen.
Breath-taking.
Thanks for sharing.
