The Strobist is my hero! (6 Images)
Posted By: Buddha Jones, 11-20-2007, 10:07 AM

Assuming that everyone here knows who The Strobist is, but if not, this is THE MAN. Well at least to me, because he is going to teach me proper lighting techniqes, and do it on the cheap!

My first project was to build a lightbox for macro and product shooting. I figure with this months contest being macro flowers and I am selling some of my lenses, this would be a great opportunity to do this little project. Strobist: How To: DIY $10 Macro Photo Studio.

So I went to WalMart over the weekend to get my supplies and started work building this Sunday night, took about 30 minutes to do. Here are the results.

Complete setup;
Clamp on spotlight attached to kitchen chair and overhead light from ceiling light fixture. Simple tripod with Velbon Slider attached. 14x14x14in box was used and tracing paper to diffuse the light on 3 sides.

A cleaner shot of the setup. (I need larger tracing paper, I forgot to cut inside the lines I drew out. )

The fruits of my labor;
These were done with the Vivitar S1 105mm Macro

These were taken today with the Sigma 24-135mm

I think the results are very acceptable for an el'cheapo DIY design. I will eventually get some better lighting and perhaps learn how to use my AF360 wirelessly. But for now, daddy like.

LOL - I'm glad someone else has flashes set up around the dinner table regularly...

Nice setup, cheap (I like cheap too!) and it serves it's purpose. Well done.
