Prison museum in Rawlins, Wyo.

I got there a little early.

Just opening up at 8AM.

Museum stuff.

Prison people.

Some think Annie took the rap for her mother.

Repeat offender.

The band.

Hard to tell the difference.

Knick-knacks.

James Julian and his gallows design.

The hangee had to listen to the water dribble away.

Escape of 1912.

There is a prison cemetery.

Prison model. The big black building in back is only a foundation now.

Whiskey still and special pack saddle to carry whiskey barrels.

Friendly type...

There were 11 women here at one time before it went men-only.

Hard to tell from the sign but there is a peace officers museum, as well.

Ah, it's the 8:30 tour...

A movie was made here, and there are some remnants from that - including the fake door dividing the visitation room.

Cell Block A.

The tour guide, Sarah, demonstrates the Johnson bar which could open all the cells at one time.

Your room is ready...

Barbershop.

The library is one of the few places that had carpet.

Cell Block B.

Another cell.

The kitchen.

The dining room. The paintings were done by an inmate. You can't tell here, but in the far painting of the sheep, the eyes moved to follow you - just a reminder you are being watched. There is also a painting of trees and train tracks, and you are always on the "right side of the tracks" no matter where you are looking from.

The artiste.

Another door.

Foundation of the big building.

Another door.

Inside.

The prison had a baseball team and other teams came here to play.

A recreation of the gallows.

Death row.

Death row cell.

The gas chamber.

It was suggested you hold your breath. The gas worked just as well through your skin, and would not burn your lungs...

Another door, to C Block.

There was a basketball hoop, but if you went after the loose ball beyond this line, you risked being shot.

Cell Block C cell.

If you were bad they took away your blanket. If you were really bad, they took away your mattress, and you slept on cement.

Before the enlightened era of classrooms and rehabilitation, they might stick you naked in the 4x4-ft windowless cell called the Old Hole for its sewer system.

Ah, tour is done. I'm left to finish looking around...

Mugshot camera.

The next tour. I was the only one on mine - it pays to be early :-)

I made it out.

A couple other nice places in town are the church...

And the Ferris mansion which is now a bed-and-breakfast.

Kyle, we have stayed in Rawlins several times and never visited here. What an interesting place to visit and you got the grand tour, one on one can't beat that. Looks like we may be going through the area again next year, so we will stop and take a look. Thanks for taking the time to upload all of the photos. Bob
