Great series. I especially like #4. It is curious that the curtains in #3 only hide men faces, not their backs - there should be a story behind it.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi
You see these half curtains everywhere in Japan, doesn't seem to be any reason for it. I travel a lot to Japan but I yet have to find out about these half curtains. Even my Japanese friends don't seem to know quite why, its just tradition I think. They are mainly used in restaurants, bars and shops where they hang from doors everywhere. Bit of a nuisance really as they always brush your face as you go through.

Greetings

Nice shots for sure, and interesting. The curtains are sort of neat I think....a little privacy, but not all closed in.
Regards!

As far as I know, the intention of the curtains is to make the customers bow as they enter the premises. You bow as you enter, and the staff shout "Irrashaimase!" (welcome to our place).

Great shots from Japan! Some unusual images - not the usual tourist things. Having said that the one I like the most is the shot of the temple because of the way the out of focus plants frame it.

Just a few more from Japan.
The lady in the foreground in the last shot is no accident, I wanted something in the foreground and was waiting for the right moment. She is not quite in the right place as I wanted it, but I guess you can't everything.

Greetings

Hi
Thanks for the accolades.
This is actually a plausible explanation and not even my Japanese friends came up with this one. Perhaps the older generation is more familiar with this, the younger ones just brush the curtains to one side with their hands as I have observed. Certainly this is what I do. I'll be in Japan again January and I'll try this out and see what the reaction is.

They certainly shout "Irrashaimase!" and not too quietly either.

Greetings

I'll try to remember to ask my Japanese friends. Were all these photos taken in Kyoto? A couple in the second group remind me of the areas around Ginkakuji and Gion, while the last one reminds me of downtown.

In some places the staff seem to compete to shout it the loudest.

Here's a couple of links which suggest the noren curtains helped to keep out dust, advertise that a shop is open, what they sell, and perhaps in ancient times were a ward against evil.

You are not wrong.

All taken in Osaka.

Last shot: Didn't have my wide angle on me, otherwise you would see one happy customer lying under the table in this shot.

Greetings and thanks for the links
