K10D and DFA 2.8 100mm macro
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 11-23-2007, 05:12 PM

I do not like the build quality of this lens but want to make sure that optically it is fine before I make up my mind wether to return it or not.

Hard to find live subjects for macro shots this time of year but found a small daddy long leg. After I woke him up he would not stand still long enough for a decent shot but I did get a few. I was amazed at how fast he was even with two missing legs on one side.

By accident I took these at iso 400

Is that 90 mm lens the equivalent of 150 mm in 35 mm camera?

These look great to me, the build quality may not be great but the glass seems fine.

Nicely done!

I never have quite figured out why insects just... dont... stand... still.

Some good images, Heinrich, particularly the second one. It's quite a piece of glass you have.

I agree with all the others no apparent issues with the glass and operator - I am amazed you found a live spider in your neck of the woods ! Not much crawling around here (but I have not looked that close)

Daddy-longlegs are not spiders. They are, however, related to them; just like scorpions and centipedes. They do not posses biting mouth parts like a true spider but rather just have a sucking mouth appendage.

I am sure this detailed information was absolutely no comfort to you whatsoever.

Nice closeups Heinrich! I looked at the Pentax 100 macro and decided against it in favour of the Voigtlander 125 Lanthar Macro lens. Although it is manual focus it is beautifully constructed metal bodied lens. Albeit expensive, it is a damn fine piece of photographic equipment.

What 90mm lens? The EXIF from each picture says it is a 100mm lens.

.... must just be a typo.

And you have the 1.5X cropping thing backwards. First of all a 100mm lens is a 100mm lens; whether it is on either a Pentax film body or a Pentax digital SLR body. However, it has the appearance of a 150mm lens on a Digital SLR body due to the crop factor.

Thank you everyone, your comments are always appreciated.

I will take a few more before I make up my mind to keep or return this lens. I picked up bigma this morning so now I must check hat one out as well.

See ... now this makes me what to get out and really test out my Tamron 90mm Macro lens ... I really need to find some spare time and shoot more.

By the looks of this series though ... it's a keeper ... why return a lens that is this sharp.
I have read reviews though that the build quality isn't the best ... but that's because it's not all metal like the older Pentax 100mm macro ... but that's it ... image quality is still excellent.
