Out with the old, in with the new
Posted By: Andrew Faires, 11-26-2007, 03:56 PM

I picked up a 16-50 last week and have been getting aquainted with it ever since. However, in order to get it, I had to part with my FA* 24mm.

That said, here's a couple of shots with the 16-50:

Mary

@16mm @ f/2.8 1/6 sec. ISO 800 HH

Bike racks

@50mm @ f/11 1/125 ISO 100 HH

And from the lens that has served me well in the past:

Vines

FA* 24mm @ f/4.0 1/40 ISO 200 HH

The Bookshelf

FA* 24mm @ f/4.0, 1/25, ISO 1600 HH

All shots were PP'd in-camera except for resizing and a final USM on the re-sized images. Mary did have some more work done to her though.....I had to de-saturate cyan & blue and ran some noise reduction on her.

All comments are welcome!

The detail at both extremes looks good on the new lens Andrew. Not a lot of colour in those 2 but the Mary shot looks to have very good detail and the bike rack looks like it dealt with the blacks and whites fairly well but that is a tough shot for any lens/camera.

So any regrets? I'm looking at the same situation. I have the same lens on the way and looking at my FA20mm f2.8. Should cover close to half the cost but I like that lens....tough choices sometimes.

Wonderful works and lens! I really enjoyed #2 for the contrast and shadows and strong composition!

Thanks, Peter.

No regrets at all. F/2.0 with an all metal body are two nice things about the 24mm, but I gained a quieter AF, weather sealing, flexibility of the zoom and it seems to beat out the 24mm in sharpness. Colour & contrast are similar though. I've never used the 20mm though, so I don't know how it stacks up to the DA*.
