wrong side of the tracks
Posted By: robert, 11-26-2007, 07:46 PM

I took my stepdaughters senior pics and she wanted one by the tracks. I didn't think too much of the idea but it turned out rather well....Bob

Hi Robert,

I like the picture as well, but I was thinking there is quite a lot of background in the shot and she seems pretty far away. I think one of her standing or sitting in the middle of the tracks done close up just showing the tracks going into the distrance would make a great shot. My eyes don't really know where to go in the picture, they keep straying down to her boot ont he track or the sign in the far left of the frame, neither of which are important. Also, the daylight seems a bit harsh. You're on the right track though!!! (pun intended)

I was thinking leaving her where she is, going vertical, and taking the picture from the middle of the tracks.

"The blue" is very nice. It might have been even better with the hands, I think.

Very nice Bob - she does seem to have a good relationship with the lens - well done.

Robert, please don't take offence to my comments.

As a post The first and Red are quite good. The red would have been perfect but her red top blends-in too much with the harvester/machine.

The blue, perhaps as a result of resizing, gives her teeth an odd look. It could be the shine.

The first shot is quite nice as a casual portrait. I would go as already suggested, portrait mode and a tighter crop.

She's a very beautiful girl and looks like a easy-goin individual.

I will add my $.02. Again (boy are we all so nice trying not to offend) I like the shots but when I think of senior pictures I really think we should see a much closer shot or maybe the senior is the main subject with the background there but not pulling you to far away from the subject. I like all the shots but I think tighter shots will help. You can incorporate the background but maybe a little more creatively (worst speller worning ) There are a bunch of senior shots always showing up in DPreview Lighting section. if you haven't take a gander and maybe help turn the creative juices. Again just my $.02 I really like the one with the blue shirt but agree it needs so PP work. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

You have something others of us would kill for.....a model who is cooperative, readily available, and photogenic. Like so much of the rest of life, willingness and showing up counts for a lot.

Whatever other wonderful qualities she no doubt possesses as a human being, she also possesses a willingness to pose for her picture. That's a very valuable asset for practicing portrait photography. So make good use of it by also doing some work with the photos more tightly composed around her and go ahead and crank that camera up into portrait orientation.
