I have an interesting history with 300mm zooms. I had the Tamron 70-300, sold it and got the Pentax 80-320. That lens was terrible so I sold it and bought another Tammy 70-300. Sold
that and got the Pentax 55-300. Sold
that and bought the Quantaray 70-300, which of course is the Tammy 70-300 in cheap clothes.
The Pentax was the best of the bunch, optically. Sharper wide-open @ 300mm than the Tammy, better color and contrast and of course much less PF. But, and it's a big but (and I do not lie!) I really really missed the Tamron's/Quantaray's 1:2 pseudo-macro mode. The moral of the story is that I chose the lens to fit my need over the "better" lens.
