Lighthouse Against the Light
Lens: SMC Pentax-M 50mm f2 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Newport, RI ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F8

This is a photo of Rose Island Light in Newport, RI. This is a small island that a fort was built on for a short time, however it was never finished and abandoned for what became Fort Adams at the entrance to the Harbor. The Caisson beneath the lighthouse is original to the fort and was built in the late 1700's. The lighthouse is from the mid 1800's. The Lighthouse foundation maintains the building in great shape and offers tours, as well as renting out the rooms on the first floor on a nightly basis, or the second floor on a weekly basis as honorary keeper. The light is just for show these days (100W lightbulb) as the lighthouse ceased to be used for navigation in the 1970's because the newly built bridge not far behind where I shot this picture from served as a much better channel marker.

I've never seen a lighthouse with a building surrounding it quite like that, unless i'm mistaking it due to perspective.

The roof tiles remind me of snake scales in that light too

The building you see below the light deck more than just surrounds the lighthouse but is part of it. The lower portion is the keepers quarters.

Thanks a lot for the compliments, I really liked how this shot turned out.
