Cicada emerging

Well summertime is full of the sound of "Dog Day Locusts" - the annual Cicadas. We hear them, and see the adults, but rarely get to spot them emerging. This species spends years as a nymph ("baby bug") in the soil, then crawl on up a tree, split their skin, and pull themselves out.

Was out on the trail with some schoolchildren who spotted this one emerging from its shell:

Here it is fully emerged, but wings still not expanded, and body not hardened:

We did not have time to wait until hardening was complete, but here's an image of another (same species)...

Nature's full of discoveries, if we just keep our eyes open! (or spend time with children whose eyes are so much sharper than ours...)

Great capture and what a learning lesson for the children to see in person. Isn't nature wonderful, thanks for sharing. Bob

Bob - Indeed nature is wonderful, a great place for learning (for children and for us "old folks" too!)

Wow! Awesome job. Love the colors. Any idea how long the hardening does take?
