77mm; its about the bokeh stupid!
Posted By: NaClH2O, 11-30-2007, 05:43 PM

There are many things I like about my 77ltd, but I'd say the thing I like most is the almost magical bokeh it can produce. DS 77mm F1.8: f1.8 @ 1/500

Bokeh, in japanese means blurred I think. My sister who speaks fluent japanese says that it's sometimes used as a slang term for jet lag! In photographic terms it means how the camera/lens renders the out of focus areas. Hopefully others will chime in with some more photographic examples of bokeh.

The word we usually see romanized as "bokeh" is ボケ or "boke" in Japanese and is used in a variety of situations. It is most commonly used to refer to the mental fog of senility, with the photographic use of the term being slang derived from that. The mental fog of jet lag is 時差ボケ (jisa boke), with "jisa" meaning "time difference". I've encountered and used the word thousands of times over almost a quarter century, and never once with it in the context of photographic "bokeh" until I started noticing all the non-Japanese all over the world who have adopted the term. Not saying Japanese shutterbugs don't use the term, just saying that it's normal non-photographic meaning is far and away more mainstream and well-known in the land of the term's origin.

I'm not a bokeh fanatic... yet... but I like the effect in these from 3 different lens

Pentax F*300/4.5
1/320s f/4.5 at 300.0mm iso400

1/500s f/7.1 at 300.0mm iso250

Tamron 28-75/2.8
1/4000s f/2.8 at 75.0mm iso200

Vivitar 105/2.5 Series 1
1/180s f/10.0 at 100.0mm iso200

Vivitar 105/2.5 Series 1
1/500s f/3.5 at 100.0mm iso400

Hi all,
Cool photos, everyone! Very smooth!

Also thanks to Mike Cash, for a unique and insightful interpretation of the term bokeh. I've "understood" the western meaning from reading the forums, but your locality and effort in learning the local language provides insight that would be nearly impossible for any "gai jin" to ever learn. Thanks for taking the time to post the info!

Oh, and I think Bud's shot #3 is really cool, just because it's approaching the limits of "our" camera, @ f/2.8, 1/4000, ISO 200....
