I was standing on Thin Ice for this one
Posted By: little laker, 11-30-2007, 09:21 PM

When I got to the position I wanted for this 22 image panoramic I heard the ice under my feet cracking. (I thought I was still on land)
Thankfully I didn't brake through. It was a long walk back to my car

If I would have broken through I would have only been in a few inches of water, so I wasn't in any real danger this time.

Great shot Stu. Do you use a dedicated pano head? or just a 'normal' head on your tripod?

NaCl("normal?" the only thing normal in my house is the button on the dishwasher)H2O

What an amazing pano. Excellent work and good job not getting your feet wet.

Another great pano Stu, nice job! I really like the transition in the sky on this one. I'm sure it would look great hanging on a wall where you could take the whole thing in at once.
Thanks Fritz, That's a good idea.

I'll probably get it printed in a couple of weeks.

I didn't even realize how impressive that was until I scrolled to the bottom, couldn't find the reply box, and noticed that I had seen less than half the photo!

Outstandingly impressive image and my respect to you for the dedication to getting it. I would have balked at the cold, the ice, the water, and the 22 images!

May I say that this would be a perfect candidate for the new "imgwide" and "/imgwide" tags?
Thanks Mike,
I know about the IMGWIDE tags, but thought it would take too much away from the bridge.
I'd like it better if it would open the full sized image up, instead of just screen width

Thanks Mike, had it not been for your comment I would still be looking for the footprints Peter saw.

Stu, is that a film 28mm?
It's a 28mm film lens but still on my digital.
I've put off buying the medium format camera for about 2 weeks, when I have some more cash coming in.

Nice Stu ... looks damn cold there.
It's warm here at the moment ... well ... warm and wet.
Thanks Simon,
I almost hate to say that I'll take cold any day over wet, but my old bones just can't handle the wet.

Great pano Stu - love the sky as others have mentioned. The water , the snow , the trees , I have been on ice before and heard it crack - a disconcerning sound for sure.

Curious what was the final file size of the stiched pano ?
Thanks Dave,
The final size is 16400 x 2850 pixles.
10.3 MB

That is really nice! I like how the colors fade into black and white to the left!
Thanks Ole,
I just wish that I would have had the MF film camera there for it.

Thanks Salty,
It was about a 1/2 mile hike into there, due to them not plowing the road, so I just brought the basics.
I never even thought about shooting a pano until I was there, so I left the tripod in my car.
As a result it was hand held

Thank you very much LaRee,

I'll probably be able to walk right across the river my next time there, and keep my feet dry.
Although the photo's won't have the same effect without the running water.

That was a freehand pano?

Wow, you got one steady hand and good level eye!

Nice work Stu,

Nice transition in the sky on the right side. Really nice scene.

You do need to clone out that little area of dropout in the extreme top left corner. Ya' know... there is always someone to knitpick!

Thanks Salty,
I'd call it more being too lazy to carry my tripod
I actually look for a natural line, and use that as a guide through the view finder.
Why am I sharing my secrets

And your right. But then again Why Be Normal

Thanks Stephen,
That light area does catch the attention a little and I could always clone it out. But it's more natural this way.
If I get it printed off I'll probably do something about it

Really nice panny shot! I haven't tried to "stich" photos yet. Is autostich a PS plugin?

Thanks triple,

It's a stand alone program located here
It's a really small download as well, so dial up users should even be able to get it.

It does make your computer work when making a big panoramic.

really moody image

Hi Stu!

I think had it not been anything but that sort of an overcast day, it wouldn't be the same. I love the moodiness and sense of isolation in the image (even though there is a bridge in it, it takes nothing away). Especially the cloud cover - it makes the image complete.

Well done and glad you managed to stay dry!

Cheers,
Marc
