The first shots, well 3. Are exposed for the background, a bit of fill flash or exposure compensation would help them.

Shot #2 = Focal Length: 55.0mm (35mm equivalent: 82mm... Exposure Time: 0.0050 s (1/200) Aperture:, f/14.0, ISO Equiv.: 400, Whitebalance: Manual, Metering Mode:matrix,Exposure:shutter priority (semi-auto)

Would I have been better off shooting in another mode besides shutter priority? I'm thinking (please correct me if I'm wrong) f/14 is way to large a DOF for this type of shot and shutter speed could have been a bit faster because there is some blurr in the photo if you look at his feet! The photo below came out a bit better as far seeing the subject clearer although I did blow the highlights and so converted to B&W. It was shot at f/3.5 and represents a little closer at what I was aiming for. Thoughts?

One other question. As you can see in the last photo posted I was shooting under a gazebo with some pretty bright sunlight behind us. How do you compensate for this? I tried but seemed to just get a silhouette effect!

I like thge skater shots then bam that old man quite a portrait. Flash fill would help the harsh sunlight.
