Learning Panning
Lens: Sigma 28mm - 90mm f3.5 - 5.6 Camera: Pentax k10d Photo Location: Sydney Shutter Speed: 1/90s Aperture: F5.6

I am not sure, but I feel that the first 3 shots are slightly out of focus. That is, the main item is lightly out of focus. At least this is my perception.

Thanks, i think you are right.. this is the first time i am doing this.. I think i may have mastered it by the last shot but I will try again next week.

Yes. The last shot is spot on! I think you've done well. Panning adds a lot to the feeling of speed in the photos.

Focusmagic (and other PP software) has motion smear correction as an option; it'd do a good job in correcting minor motion problems as in some of the boats in your photos.

thanks!! I am new to PP, at least i know what software to look for now! i can't wait to try panning again next week!

I am no expert but in the first set the shutter speed in the last was just about spot on 1/180s anf the aperture was about right at f/9-f/11 all thats needed is to practice how you sweep as you follow the action

yes... i think for now, it's either hit or miss.. hehee.. i'll try again next time with these settings...

as for slower boats... what shutter speed is recommended to get the same effect?

Nice, its an art for sure - for slower boats maybe 1/60 shutter.

The function to recover out-of-focus works well too; it is basically a deconvolution treatment that really does recover focus rather than simply adding artificial edge contrast. Although I think some edge highlights might be added too.
