That's a great image Joe, love the pearlescent wings.

There are 6 species of dragon flies here, they all have 4 wings. Does this dragon have only two?

Regards

Perhaps that is the case. Also I think the dragon flies here are strictly meat eaters. Whatever it is I like it.

Alright - so what is this thing? Looked all over google under different bees, flies and other flying insects and can not find anything that resembles this...

Joe, it looks like it's a robber fly. See the wiki article:

There is a dead space between the left and right eye (in the middle) on robber flies; the eyes are basically separate like our eyes, see this pic of a robber fly (3rd pic down): https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/157684-macro-yet-again-a...day-field.html

Edit: Also, robber flies are carnivorousness (at least I believe they are), this one here was juicing up on flower nectar...

I see that dead space now, thanks. And, I'll keep looking.

I looked everywhere and just can't seem to find anything that resembles it - I probably just keep looking over it or something. I may have to print it out and go by the university and see if they can track it down for me...

That sounds like a good idea. I too have looked and looked and just can't find it. I find ones that look similar then find there is a bit difference in your photo and bug I see.

Nice capture Joe! There are plenty of tree huggers in my area. I should be able to get you an answer as soon as I get back to work.

Not a clue what it is, but baby dragonflies live underwater - unless the nymph was also really small then surely it can't really be a dragonfly (as in they don't start out at half an inch long then grow to three inches long out of the water). Also dragonflies don't really do nectar as far as I know, they're carnivores.

Down here, where I live, we call them Mosquito Hawks. And I forgot to tell you it is a nice capture.
