Pet Quaker Parakeet
Camera: Olympus UZ
Posted By: sumrall, 09-07-2011, 11:28 AM

Raised this Quaker from a fledgling. Kept his flight feathers clipped until age two. Decided that wasn't humane. Let feathers grow and accepted that if he flew away, he'd be happier.

For the next four years he flew freely whenever we took him outdoors. He never once left our yard and would always return and land on my shoulder.

We lost him one weekend while wife & I were on a trip. He chewed a hole in a fiberglass screen and escaped. Since he never returned we figured a neighbor got him. I hope they treated him fairly.

Photo #1: The day we got him in '98 and then a shot taken in 2003 when he was five years old.
Photo #2: One of the family at dinner table.
Photo #3. On back deck checking out a squirrel.
Photo #4: On my knee eating popcorn.
Photo #5: Eating ice cream - this shot made the local paper.

This very cool. Sorry your friend took off. Even though you gave him the opportunity to stay or go, it still had to be hard. Looked like he was very much a part of the family.
