The Difference Between Extension Tubes and Reversing
Lens: SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8 Camera: K-x
Posted By: Colorado CJ, 09-12-2011, 07:32 PM

Thought I'd post these couple of photos here for those who are new to the macro world, like myself.

I shot a couple of photos today of a grasshopper. One using a set of extension tubes and the other using a reversing ring and reversing the same lens.
Both of these pictures were shot using the same SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8 lens

First using a set of extension tube.

Next reversing the lens

I like the extension tubes personally. It is much harder using the extension tubes though as it is a much more magnified image. Also, the focal plane is much thinner compared to reversing the lens.

Your generally supposed to use the lens reversed on extension tubes

Thanks, I should probably try that . I don't have a set of K mount extension tubes right now though, These are a set of screw mount extensions I got with the Takumar lens.

.... goes looking on bhphoto for extension tubes...

Good closeups. While at B&H, get yourself the 49mm dual thread reversal ring then you can reverse the 55 on top of another lens with 49mm threads

Beautiful shot. I'm still unsure which one to get (or both). Anyone experience increase dust using reversing rings?

I'd probably get both, they aren't that expensive if you get a set of extensions without any electronic passthroughs.
