Fly with Stacked Lenses
Lens: M50 F1.7 and Tak 55 1.8 Camera: K-x ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/150s Aperture: F8
Posted By: Colorado CJ, 09-15-2011, 06:36 PM

I'm trying different types of lens combinations. This one was shot with my SMC Tak 55mm F1.8 reversed on my M50mm F1.7. The picture would have been much sharper, but there wasn't much light (rainy) so I had to shoot at 1600 ISO.

Still learning. This combo gives pretty good magnification though.

Thanks guys. I can't tell you how much fun this is. I don't know why I haven't tried macro shooting sooner.

I like this stacked lens setup. I might try to incorporate a teleconverter to see how much more magnification I can get with it. I also have a few more larger primes I might try stacking the Tak 55mm on. Endless possibilities and tinkering (which I enjoy).

yeatzee, that looks like my exact fly, great picture! I need to read up on that focus stacking and try it for myself. Do you happen to know what kind of fly this is? I've been looking online and can't find an exact match.

dierp, DO IT, you won't be disappointed.

Nice one CJ - with the flies, they tend to be very curious and will stay still for a bit; one thing you can do is tripod the shot, this will allow you to focus wide open then once focused stop down (between 11 and 16 on the tak) and take the shot...

Thanks Joe, I can't wait to get good enough to produce macro shots up to your standards!

yeatzee, I think I found the exact species. It is called the Coenosia attenuata or "hunter fly", one of the few predatory flies in the muscid family.

The interesting thing is that this species is a native to southern Europe and was only discovered in North America in 2001, in New York state. Didn't take them long to get to Colorado!
